Many marketers have already experimented with ChatGPT, using it to draft blog posts, generate email subject lines, or write social media captions. However, if you’re still using it like a simple tool where you input a prompt and expect a perfect result, you’re missing out on its full potential. The real value of ChatGPT comes from engaging in what we call “prompt conversations” — a back-and-forth interaction that refines and improves content through a more deliberate, iterative process. This collaborative approach leads to better content, sharper thinking, and fewer generic outputs.

Here’s how to maximize your results and take your marketing efforts to the next level with ChatGPT.

Think in Stages, Not Single Prompts

One of the most effective ways to use ChatGPT is to break your content creation process into stages. Instead of expecting a fully finished product with just one prompt, treat each stage as an opportunity to shape the final outcome.

For instance, if you’re writing a blog post about cybersecurity for small businesses, don’t just ask ChatGPT to generate a complete 1,000-word article. That’s likely to result in something generic. Instead, start by giving it a role to play and an expected outcome: “Act as a content strategist. Give me five blog post angles on cybersecurity for small businesses.”

Then, build on this. Once you have the ideas, ask ChatGPT to take one and create a detailed outline. From there, request specific sections or drafts, such as writing the introduction in a conversational tone, or referencing a recent news event. This phased approach allows you to fine-tune and correct any misdirection early on, ensuring you stay aligned with your goal.

Refine With Micro-Prompts

Don’t settle for the first draft that ChatGPT provides. Instead, use micro-prompts to revise and refine the content. This is where the real magic happens — the conversation between you and the AI. You can request specific changes to improve clarity, style, or tone.

For example, if a paragraph feels too long or unclear, ask: “Make this paragraph more concise.” Or if you want to add a creative touch, prompt: “Add a metaphor to make this idea more relatable.” You can also adjust the style: “Rewrite this in the tone of a Seth Godin blog post.” These micro-revisions make the AI’s output more polished, precise, and unique.

Leverage ChatGPT for Strategic Thinking

ChatGPT isn’t just a tool for content creation — it can also help you with strategic thinking. Use it for tasks like naming campaigns, testing messaging, or exploring buyer personas. For example, ask it: “Give me five brand voice directions for a SaaS platform targeting mid-market CFOs.” From there, you can explore how each voice might describe the same feature, helping you understand how your messaging might land with different audiences.

ChatGPT can even role-play as a competitor or a skeptical customer, providing you with valuable insights into how your messaging might be perceived. By engaging it in these higher-level strategic conversations, you’ll gain ideas that you might not have considered otherwise.

Build a Prompt Stack for Consistency

Once you discover sequences of prompts that work well for certain types of content, create a "prompt stack" — a set of step-by-step prompts that produce consistent, high-quality results. For instance, if you regularly write case studies, newsletters, or landing pages, saving a series of prompts for those specific content types can streamline your process and improve overall quality.

A prompt stack also helps when onboarding new team members, ensuring they have a repeatable process that consistently delivers excellent content. Over time, this will reduce friction and increase efficiency across your marketing campaigns.

Beware of AI Blind Spots

While ChatGPT is powerful, it’s important to remain vigilant for its potential shortcomings. AI may sometimes invent information or cite sources that don’t exist, which could lead to errors in your content. Always double-check the facts, statistics, and quotes that ChatGPT provides. If it gives a specific study or quote, verify it with a quick search.

Additionally, AI-generated content can often fall into certain overused phrases and clichés, like “In today’s fast-paced world…” or “Unlock the power of [insert feature here]…” These phrases are generic and can make your content feel stale. Proactively ask ChatGPT to avoid clichés and rewrite sections with more originality. For instance, prompt: “Avoid generic marketing language. Rewrite this intro with a unique and engaging opening.”

Shaping the Conversation

The key to getting the most out of ChatGPT lies in shifting your mindset from "asking" to "shaping." Instead of relying on the AI to produce a perfect result in a single prompt, use it as a collaborative partner. Guide it through revisions, ask for clarification, and experiment with different strategies. With this iterative approach, you’ll achieve better content faster, while unlocking new insights and creative possibilities.

ChatGPT can get you 80% of the way, but it’s the last 20% — the refinement, personality, and strategic thinking — that you bring to the table. By using AI as a co-creator rather than a tool, you can produce higher-quality content and smarter marketing strategies.

So, start a smarter conversation with ChatGPT, and watch your content reach its full potential.
